PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Comparison of Microbes

BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND PROTISTS

PROTISTS

  • Simplest Eukaryotes
  • Not plants, animals, or fungi
  • Ex. Slime, algae, mold, amoeba
  • Aquatic, live in the water
  • Unicellular

Viruses

  • Not a living organism, but contain genetic material
  • Tiny particle much smaller than a prokaryotic cell
  • Depends on a host to synthesize its proteins and make copies of itself
  • Infect and live inside other organisms, may cause disease
  • Ex. hepatitis, influenza, the common cold, HIV

Bacteria

  • Prokaryotic (no membrane bound nucleus or organelles) and unicellular
  • Very diverse and abundant
  • Located in almost any habitat
  • Some harmful and some helpful - harmful may be cure with antibiotics
  • Ex. Salmonella, E. Coli
