SIEGE OF VICKSBURG

VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI

  • The Confederates were lead by Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton
  • The Union was lead by Major General Ulysses S. Grant.

THE BATTLE BEGINS

  • Both sides wanted control over the Mississippi River to transport supplies and soldiers

THE SIEGE

  • The siege lasted 47 days
  • The citizens that lived in Vicksburg during the battle were forced to live in caves
  • Food and supplies were cut of for a month and a half and rationed very lightly

OUTCOME

  • The Union forced Pemberton to surrender.
  • Confederate soldiers were in the verge of deserting because of lack of food and water.

IMPACT

  • The Union had full control of the Mississippi River.
  • They cut off any supplies or back up that the South needed, leaving them weak and vulnerable.
