3 MAIN TYPES OF NARRATOR

  • Omniscient
  • First Person
  • Third Person

OMNISCIENT

  • Narrator is not a character in the story
  • Never refers to himself or herself
  • Omniscient means "all knowing"
  • Tell us every characters thoughts, feelings, and actions

FIRST PERSON

  • Character in the story who talks to us
  • Get a very personal view
  • We ONLY know what he or she thinks
  • And what they choose to tell us

  • Storyteller zooms in on one character
  • But talks about the character in third person
  • Using he or she
  • We share one characters reactions to everything
  • But what we know about the other characters is limited

TONE

  • The attitude a speaker or writer takes toward a subject
  • If you change the point of view in the story
  • Your tone might change as well

  • You can often identify the author of a piece of writing
  • Voice can may change over time but it mostly stays the same
