PRESENTATION OUTLINE

I BELIEVE THE INTERACTION WITH THE MOOR

WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL OF HIS EXPERIENCES

CONVERSION

  • Sickbed- no experience
  • First real experience on the road to Montserrat
  • Meets the Muslim Moor

Discuss about religion
More importantly it was about the virginity of Mary

Not surprisingly they disagreed on a few things

Moor analysis stem from scientific knowledge
Because Jesus was born

IGNATIUS'S REACTION

  • Ignatius was outraged and felt insulted
  • He thought it might be his knightly duty to defend the honor of Mary
  • This was to be accomplished by killing the Moor
  • This shows Ignatius still has the soldier mentality

THE DECISION

  • Ignatius leaves it up to chance on the Moor's fate (Mule)
  • Not true discernment (spiritually not yet converted)
  • Show he is incapable of making decisions on his own
  • Conversion is an on going process

IMPRESSION

  • That he told the story-book written years later upon reflection
  • Written when he was a much more churchman and well formed
  • regarded as a master of discernment and spiritual wisdom
  • Yet this experience suggest otherwise
  • Makes him look foolish and dangerously misguided but overall it shows humility
