PRESENTATION OUTLINE
I WILL BE FINDING THE SLOPE OF..
- A staircase
- The slope of the back of a chair to the seat of the chair.
The slope of an object is found by calculating the rise/run. Or the vertical measurement by the horizontal measurement. Slope is used in many different ways in day to day life, especially in architecture.
Each step on my staircase has a rise of 7 inches and a run of 10 inches. This makes it very easy to calculate the slope. You do not have to multiply this by the number of steps there are, because the answer would be reduced to the measurement of one step. So the slope of my staircase is 7/10 or 0.7.
My desk chair's seat is 18 inches from front to back. (Run) The back of the chair is 16.25 inches high. (Rise) This makes the slope of the chair 16.25/18 or 8.125/9
Compared to the slope of my staircase, the slope of the chair is the slightest bit steeper. When converted into a decimal, the slope of the chair is 0.9 while the slope of the stairs is only 0.7.
