LAKE VICTORA

  • It is Africa's largest lake and has a surface area of 26,600 square miles
  • It is the world's second largest freshwater lake
  • Lake Victoria is about 400,000 years old
  • 80% of the lake's water comes from rain

NILE RIVER

  • It is the longest river in the world, 4,160 miles long
  • The rivers average discharge is 300 million cubic meters per day
  • There are nine countries the Nile and its tributaries flow through
  • Nile River is derived from the Greek word "neilos" which means "river"

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

  • The mountain range stretches approximately 1,600 miles
  • Mineral deposits found in this mountain range include gold, silver, zinc, lead, and iron.
  • Toubkal is the highest mountain in the range, and in North Africa, 13,671 feet high
  • The slopes of the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges have thick forests

GREAT RIFT VALLEY

  • The Rift Valley varies mostly between 600 and 900 metres in depth
  • runs south from Jordan in south west Asia, through East Africa and down to Mozambique in southern Africa
  • It is 4,000 miles long and is 35 miles wide
  • 30 million years old and produced Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.

SAHARA DESERT

  • It is the biggest hot desert
  • The Sahara is just 30 percent sand and 70 percent gravel.
  • Prehistoric cave drawings have been discovered that actually depict the flora as green and thriving.
  • One could place the entire United States within the Sahara Desert and still have a few thousand square miles of desert left over

NIGER RIVER

  • The river is 2597 miles long
  • The Niger's water is very clear
  • It has nearly 250 species of fish
  • The West African manatee lives in the river
