HEALTHY SLEEP

INTRODUCTION

Most people think that cutting on sleep is the best way to fulfill the needs of your day.
But it is not!
Sleep is just as important as good nutrition and exercise.

MENTAL HEALTH

Not getting enough sleep is going to affect your creativity, emotions and mental sharpness. It can reduce your ability to solve problems. While sleeping, your brain is constantly working to keep your body in shape and ready for the next day.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Lack of sleep can increase your chance of getting various health issues. Most importantly, it can affect your weight. When you are sleepy you want to eat sugary foods to get an energy boost. This results in weight gain. Enough sleep can make you strong. When you sleep, blood is directed away from the brain and into the muscles and repairs them.

HEALTHY SLEEP

There is a difference between enough sleep and healthy sleep. You may need just 9 hours to function properly, but you might do better on 10 or 11 hours.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M SLEEPING ENOUGH ?

Elementary students should be getting 10 -11 hours of sleep. You may be suffering from lack of sleep if...
😴You need an alarm clock.
😴You use the snooze button a lot.
😴You have a hard time getting out of the bed in the morning.
😴You have to sleep during the day to get through it.

SO WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You could...
😴Do a relaxing activity before going to bed, like reading or listening to music.
😴Keep noise down.
😴Keep your room cool (around 18 C).
😴Only use your bed for sleep.
😴If you think you need more than 9 hours, try sleeping for 10 or 11 and see if you function better.

BUT WHY?

When you get enough sleep...
😴It helps you stay focused and mentally sharp.
😴It keeps you physically fit and healthy.
😴It maintains overall wellness.
