FOOD

  • Plantain Bread
  • Camarones- Arroz con Pollo (with chicken) and Arroz con Camarones (with shrimp) are both traditional dishes found throughout Latin America
  • Choclo- Dry roasted Andean corn is sold as a snack food on the streets

GESTURES

  • Shaking someone’s wrist because they don’t want to insult you by extending a dirty hand
  • An open palm shaken from up to down indicates that something (or someone) is not there or available

RELIGION

  • The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of other Christian faiths. Indigenous Ecuadorians, however, have blended Catholicism and their traditional beliefs.

TRADITIONS

  • The Inti Raymi is an important Indian celebration and it means The Sun's celebration and harvest. This tradition is practiced mainly on the highlands of Ecuador.
  • During September there is the Yamor Feast it takes place in Otavalo City and lasts 2 weeks. It is a celebration filled with parades, dancing, music and fireworks.

AGRICULTURE

  • Pig production is spread throughout the country while sheep and goats are concentrated in the Andean regions
  • Plantain, bananas, and rice are widely grown in this region as well
