He was born into a wealthy and politically prominent family.
For example, his paternal grandfather was, at the time of Aurelias birth, consul (ancient Roman official) for the second time. His aunt was married to a man who was in line to become the next emperor. Therefore, Aurelias was somehow related, either by blood or marriage to the most politically prominent families in Rome.
Growing up, he was a dedicated student who had a great interest in philosophy, especially stoicism (a philosophy that emphasizes fate, reason, and self-restraint).
During his 19 year reign, he made many reforms to the Roman laws and traditions. Some include being considerate to the poor by lowering their taxes and making changes to their harsh civil obligations.
He also defended Rome against the Germans and Parthian invaders.
One of his most memorable and long-lasting achievements was his work in philosophy. He published the book, "Meditations", with is still read by many philosophy students all around the world.
