HISTORY OF PEDIATRICS

  • 400 BC: Hippocrates wrote pieces concerning pediatric health, such as mumps and hydrocephalus.
  • 100 AD: Soranus was the first to use finger nail test to check the quality of breast milk.
  • 990 AD: Avicenna wrote about health issues such as worms and umbilical abscess.
  • 1802: the first pediatric hospital was opened in Paris.
  • 1855: the first pediatric hospital opened in the United States in Philadelphia.

  • 1964: the first hospice house for children was established in Paris.
  • 1930's: The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Pediatric Society was founded.

  • In high school, an aspiring Pediatrician should take basic sciences and math classes.
  • A high school diploma is required
  • 4 years of college
  • 4 years of medical school
  • 3+ years of general pediatric training.

  • There are many varying ages at which one can start the career, you are eligible if you have finished all education requirements.
  • You must be healthy physically and mentally
  • You must be able to work with children and their guardian
  • You must have 3+ years of general pediatric medicine residency.
