Forensic Lab Tour

Alternate Light Source

  • Used to uncover hidden traces of evidence not seen by the naked eye
  • UV Lights

Ballistic Photograph

  • Can be used to examine characteristics of bullets and bullet residues
  • Can also be used to determine to velocity, distance, and angle the shot was fired

Compound Stereo Microscope

  • Can be used to characterize soil, plants, and clothing fibers
  • Can magnify objects up to 1000x

SEM

  • Scanning Electron Microscope
  • Has the ability to magnify objects up to 200,000x
  • Can be used to analyze gunshot residue, firearms, handwriting, and counterfeit money

TEM

  • Transmission Electron Microscope
  • Sends a beam of electrons through evidence and can magnify objects up to 500,000x
  • Can be used to analyze trace evidence

Fume Hood

  • Used for working with liquids, gases, vapors and chemical fumes
  • Designed to capture and exhaust fumes resulting from working with these chemicals

Chromatogram

  • Analyses by color, based on original use
  • Uses two types of phases
  • Stationary--places particles and keeps them still
  • Mobile--pumps in the analyte to push through the stationary phase
  • Used to separate drugs from cutting agents, accelerants from fire residues

Spectrometer

  • Can identify components that come out of the gas chromatography column
  • Can be used to compare two samples of evidence based of the graph produced

Centrifuge

  • Used for physical separation, based on density
  • The mixtures inside are spun at high speeds which cause the substances inside to separate

Solid Phase Extraction

  • Used to concentrate and and purify samples for analysis
  • Can analyze blood, tissues and even explosives since it doesn't require heat

Computers

  • Extracts digital evidence
  • Compiles evidence in Database to link and solve crimes

CODIS

  • Combined DNA Index System
  • FBI's program of support for criminal justice DNA databases
  • Collects and stores DNA evidence from past criminals and felons

SICAR

  • Shoeprint Image Capture and Retrieval Database
  • Collects shoeprints, shoes of suspects, and shoes on the market

NCIC

  • A computerized index of criminal justice information
  • Includes information about criminal records, fugitive, stolen properties, and missing persons
