WHAT IS CHILD LABOR?

  • Child labor is simply work that children should not be doing at such a young age in dangerous environments and work places.
  • Children are doing work on farms, in factories, manufacturing companies, and in types of construction
  • These children are usually forced to work so that they can provide an income for their families
  • Children who are working are deprived of an education and of their childhood

CHILD LABOR TODAY

  • Children are sold into slavery and are forced to work in terrible conditions for several hours
  • After working for so long, they become extremely exhausted and feel miserable
  • Not only do the children slaves work long and hard but they are also mistreated and abused by their owners

CHILD LABOR IN AMERICA

  • In just the US, there are about 300,000-800,000 child slaves working on farms
  • Fair Labor Standards Act was passed by Congress to limit the amount of hours a child could work, however, this excludes children of migrant workers

CHURCH'S STANCE

  • "Child labour, in its intolerable forms, constitutes a kind of violence that is less obvious than others but it is not for this reason any less terrible." [639][1]
  • The use of children for the benefit of others is not what God had intended when he created us all and effects the community in a negative way because the children can't have the childhood they deserve

TAKING ACTION: ORGANIZATIONS

  • Organizations such as UNICEF and the Child Labor Project have made efforts to out an end to child labor
  • They investigate stores trying to see if they have children working for them
  • If they do, organizations begin to protest the store and boycott with the goal being that they will close their store or put an end to this child slavery

TAKING aCTION: BUSINESSES

  • The Gap refuses to sell clothing after they found out that their kids clothing was embroiled by child slaves
  • Gymboree stopped using cotton that was picked by children
  • Apple stopped its partnership with a factory in China after learning that they used children to work in the factories
