TIME, LOCATION, DIRECTION

Given the opaque nature of the gallery world, and the high barrier to entry, there was much room for improvement.

  • Practical tips for collecting

PRIMARY MARKET

artwork sold for the first time
The primary market refers to the first time artwork is introduced to the market, usually by an artist selling work to a collector through their gallery.

Galleries

Galleries are the lifeblood of artists, helping them shape their voice, offering feedback, and managing all their transactions, marketing, exhibitions, and pricing.

Consultants and Advisors

Independent art advisors and consultants can be retained to help you find and purchase artwork.

Uprise Art offers this service free of charge, email advisors@upriseart.com to connect with a personal art advisor.

SECONDARY MARKET

Resale of artwork
The secondary art market refers to the resale of artwork from one owner to another. This usually is from a seller to a buyer through an auction house, but can also be collect to collector, or facilitated through the original gallery or an independent dealer.

Auction Houses

Christie's and Sotheby's are the two largest players. Others include Phillips and Bonhams. Visit their websites for a calendar of sales which you can attend by RSVPing.

More than one-fifth of all U.S. artists live in 5 major
metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago,
Washington, DC, and Boston.

Collectors

Sometimes collectors will collect on a theme, or decide to support artists working in a specific place, around a concept, or in a specific medium.
