PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Natural Selection
and Lord of the Flies
Natural Selection is a theory created by Charles Darwin to explain why there is variation within a species.
Darwin's theory says that:
Organisms produce more offspring than can survive.
Differences or mutations occur within a species.
If these variations help the individual survive in its environment that individual is more likely to reproduce and pass the variation onto its offspring.
Over time the individuals with the helpful variation can become dominant.
Natural Selection can be summed up with the phrases "Survival of the Fittest."
"Only the Strong Survive."
When natural selection was created many began wondering if it applied to humans.
Are there certain individuals or groups of people who are weak enough to deserve extinction?
Read to p. 15 in Lord of the Flies.
Underline or highlight four things that make Piggy 'unsuitable' for his environment.
