  • The Cumberland gap and Ohio river were both on the border of Kentucky.
  • Because of this, more people moved into kentucky
  • Became a state in 1792, Ohio followed as a territory in 1803.

IN DETROIT- 1800

  • Detroit was allowed village government in 1802.
  • Made up of five officials
  • First act was a fire code
  • Everyone was not always prepared
  • Police report said hogs also ran in the streets daily.

BIRTH OF THE MICHIGAN TERRITORY

  • Started as a combined territory with Indiana.
  • Became a territory in 1805 because the capital of the Indiana territory was too far away.
  • Had a governor, secretary, and three judges.
  • At this time, Michigan only had part of the upper peninsula.

DISASTER AT DETROIT

  • June 11th, 1805, Detroit burned down.
  • Fire started by ashes falling from a pipe.
  • The wind helped spread the fire house to house, there was not enough water to quell the fire.
  • No lives were lost and the town burned in three hours.
  • "We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes " became the motto for Detroit.
