THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

WHEN WAS IT?

  • The first thanksgiving was in November 1621
  • It lasted about 3 days.

WHERE WAS IT HELD?

  • It was celebrated in Plymouth or present-day Massachusetts.

WHO ATTENDED THE FIRST THANKSGIVING?

  • There were approximately 50 Pilgrims, and 90 Wampanoag Indians.
  • That makes about 140 people celebrating giving thanks.

PURPOSE OF THANKSGIVING

  • The purpose of thanksgiving is to give thanks for blessings of all the harvest.
  • Thanksgiving is a time to spend time with your family and friends.

HOW DID THEY CELEBRATE?

  • Of the 3 days the pilgrims and the Wampanoags spent during thanksgiving, some days were days of prayer.
  • But other days they spent feasting and celebrating their harvest.

FACTS VS. MYTHS

  • Myth- They ate turkey at the first thanksgiving. There was no proof of them eating turkey. They did eat things like pumpkins and Indian corn.
  • Fact- they didn't use forks at the first thanksgiving.
