PRESENTATION OUTLINE

RC 101

Reading for Understanding & Retention

Don't

  • Read for completion
  • Focus only on content [what you're reading]
  • Assume notes aren't needed
  • Think that the way you read now is how you'll read forever
  • Dawdle

DO

  • Read for comprehension
  • Focus on content [what you're reading] + skill [how you're reading]
  • Take + revisit notes (where makes most sense to house them?)
  • Record time spent reading (notes or calendar) + track progress
  • Stay mission-oriented w/school readings

Above all, remember -

  • Skill-building is a PROCESS. Becoming a strong reader, someone who LIKES reading, can take time!
  • Skill-building is a CHOICE. Stay focused and purposeful to read the rewards.
  • To explore your identity as a reader (for example, what do you like to read and why? What do you NOT like to read? Consider text types, topics, timing etc.)
