Appeasement: policy of granting concessions in order to keep peace.

World War II: war that started in Europe when Germany began invading other countries fought in Europe and Pacific.

Allies: countries led by Britain, France, the US and the Soviet Union.

Axis Powers: countries led by Germany, Italy and Japan.

Pearl Harbor: place where Japanese planes launched a surprise attack that destroyed US ships and planes, caused the US to enter WWII.

Iowa Jima: a major battle in which the US Marines landed on and captured the island of Iowa Jima from the Japanese Imperial Army.

D-Day: surprise water-to-land invasion the allies launched on Normandy, France and resulted very successful.

VE Day: Victory in Europe on May,8 1945; end of WWII in Europe.

VJ Day: Victory over Japan, on September 2, 1945; day on which Japan surrendered in World War II.

Holocaust: a genocide in which Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany and its collaborators killed about six million Jews.

Concentration Camps: Nazi Camps were they kept political prisoners as punishment, many died from starvation, disease, exhaustion and brutal treatment.

Atomic Bomb: developed by the US, first nuclear weapon.

Hiroshima: was destroyed; thousands of Japanese people died and also a lot of them died because of the effect of radiation.

Nagasaki: the second atomic bomb dropped and cause Japan to surrender.

Franklin D. Roosevelt: president when US entered WWII, helped plan the Normandy Invasion.

Joseph Stalin: leader of the Soviet Union during WWII, part of allied powers.

Winston Churchill: Great Britain Prime Minister during WWII, part of the allied powers.

Emperor Hirohito: Emperor of Japan, did not supported the war but did not hold a lot of power in Japan.

Harry Truman: became president after FDR died, responsible for dropping the atomic bomb on Japan and NATO (allies).

Benito Mussolini: leader of Italy, become leader of puppet government under Hitler.

Adolf Hitler: leader of Germany and Nazi Party, preached hatred of the Jews and is responsible for the Holocaust.

"Rosie the Riveter": fictional character the government put on posters to get women to help with production.

Tuskegee Airmen: African American squadron that escorted bombers in the air war over Europe

United Nations: organization founded in 1945 to promote peace.

UN Security Council: United States, Soviet Union, China, Great Britain.

Island hopping: strategy to seize Japanese islands in the Pacific.
