PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Writing a Thesis Statement

Topic and Perspective

What is a Thesis Statement?

  • A statement, generally one sentence, that sums up the main idea of an essay
In the same way a topic sentence details the topic of a paragraph, a thesis statement does the same thing for an essay.

It should always be in third person, formally written, and at the end of the introductory paragraph.

What should it Include?

  • Topic
  • Perspective
This is true for every thesis statement.

Topic: the subject of the essay

Generally, the topic of an essay is assigned by the instructor and found in the writing prompt.

For instance

  • Huck's Journey to maturity
  • Multiple perspective about Truth in War in The things they Carried

Perspective: Your direction on the topic of the essay

Another word to use instead of perspective might be argument; it is the part of the thesis that shows what direction a writer is going to take on the topic.

For instance

  • Huck's journey to maturity led him to be a better person than Tom Sawyer

...Or

  • In war, truth is not always seen the same way, even when the people have lived through the same situation.

Complete thesis Statements

If you struggle with writing a thesis in third person, don't struggle. Write it in first person, then strike it out of the sentence.

For example: I believe Huck's journey down the River gave him experiences that helped him develop a maturity that Tom Sawyer did not have.

That thesis statement becomes, in third person, the thesis that is on the next slide.

  • Huck's Journey down the River Gave him experiences that helped him develop a maturity that Tom Sawyer did not have.
This thesis statement would be even stronger if it included the specifics of which experiences helped change Huck.

  • The Soldiers in this novel came away from the Vietnam war with different truths about the war even though they saw the same events.
This thesis would be stronger if it included which specific characters and more specifics about the events.
