Culture

  • Influenced by Mesoamerican tribes from Central America and cultures from northern South America
  • Ruled by a chief called cacique

Legacy

  • left behind very simple artifacts
  • Pottery and ornaments
  • Left behind Stone Spheres which can weight up to 15 tons
  • Most were taken by illnesses not by any foreign attackers
  • Only 64,000 indiginous people living in Costa Rica

Problems

  • Increasing loss of territory.
  • Educational systems, political ideologies
  • traditional medicine religion and social customs are fading

  • Cabecares
  • Around 10,0000 who still use their natural language medicine and patrimonial culture
  • Caciques were allowed to have more then one wife
  • Have written down some of their legends and stories.
