  • Origin: Germany
  • By whom: Martin Luther

WHY WAS IT ESTABLISHED?

  • Main reason it was established was because of indulgences(payments to the church that granted partial remission from sin.)
  • Pope Leo needed to pay off debt and sold special indulgences throughout northern Germany
  • Wrote the 95 Theses on the issue of indulgences and had them printed throughout Germany
  • Pope sent a lawyer to debate Luther publicly. It resulted in his excommunication in 1521.
