The History, Materials, and Effects of Theatre

The BEGINNING OF THEATRE

  • Theatre all began back in B.C. by a man named Thespis
  • He wanted a way to express his emotions without being himself

  • Theatre eventually grew when William Shakespeare came along

  • Shakespeare wrote multiple shows that are still around today

Types of theaters

  • Thrust Theater: A stage surrounded by audience on three sides.
  • Arena Theater: A stage surrounded by audience on all sides.
  • Flexible Theater: usually referred to as "Black Box" theater.
  • The Flexible Theater can be manipulated however is needed.
  • Profile Theatre: Often used in "found space" theaters. Converted.

Parts inside of a Theatre

  • End Stage: A stage that extendeds wall to wall with the audience in front
  • Proscenium stage: a "picture frame around the playing area
  • Other parts may include Scene house, Fly loft, Lock rail, Fly rail
  • Loading rail, Grid House, Box boom, Beams, Cove, Booth, Scene and prop shop
  • Storage space, Light storage and maintenance, and Costume shop and storage

Important people in theatre

  • Promoter/Producer- the boss, in charge of everything. Arranges for the show
  • Production Manager- producer's assistant, handles all financial matters
  • Stage Manager- in charge of back stage operations and communications
  • Designers- design the portion of the production that they are assigned
  • Technical Director- Supervises and coordinates the technical areas

Important people in theatre 2

  • Carpenters- construction and running crew who construct the set 
  • Props- construction and running crew who handle hand props and set dressing
  • Electricians - installation and running crew who handle electrical equip.
  • Sound- electricians who install/operate electrically operated sound effects
  • Other People- Flys, Riggers, Grips, Follow Spot Operators, and Actors 

Theatre Words

  • Modernism- Modern character or quality of thought, expression, or technique
  • Musical Theatre- a play whose action and dialogue is combined with music
  • Physical Theatre- a form of theater that emphasizes physical movement
  • Storytelling- the conveying of events in words/images, often by improve
  • Other Theatre Words- Pantomime, Forum Theatre, Melodrama, and Opera

Evolution of Broadway

  • Broadway originated in the 1900's and has grown/changed greatly over years 
  • It thrived in the 1920's, but then declined after the Depression/Tv Launch 
  • Throughout the years, Broadway has made its mark on society in many ways.
  • In the beginning, the shows on Broadway were simply produced to provide joy
  • but also as an escape from the burdens of everyday life for New Yorkers

Study Process

  • I am an Actor, so why not learn more about theatre
  • Had a different part to cover everyday
  • I had to elaborate a couple of the sections that I studied 
  • Made sure I just stayed on track so I don't get behind
  • In the future I will go more into the present day theatre
