Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts.
Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins was his mother and she was an actress.
During one of her performances she began to spit up blood. On December 8, 1811 his mother died of most likely tuberculosis at the age of 24.
Poe had to go into foster care under Frances and John Allan. They were wealthy merchants in Richmond, Virginia.
In 1815 Poe attended a boarding school in Chelsea, England.
Poe attended University of Virginia. But he was in debt from gambling and his foster parents wouldn't pay, he couldn't afford it so he had to leave.
In 1827 Poe published his first book, "Tamerlane and other poems".
In 1829 his second book was published, "Al Aaraaf".
Poe was court-martialed from West Point in 1829 because it was his foster mothers deathbed wish.
In 1835 Poe got an editor's job at the Southern Literary Messenger.
Poe married young not even fourteen Virginia in 1836.
In 1837 he moved to New York City, but he was unable to find magazine work there.
In 1841 his detective story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" was published.
"The Raven" was published in 1845.
Sadly Virginia died in 1847.
But he quickly met someone else and the next year got engaged to teenage sweetheart Elmira Royster.
The next year 1849 he had got engaged again to Sarah Helen Whitman.
October 7, 1849 was the day Edgar Allan Poe died, it was a very mysterious death.
There are many theories as to how he died some say he was murdered others say because if alcoholism. There are many more theories.
His last words were, "Lord help my poor soul".
