Using a Pencil to See Things Differently

Use your eyes before you use your pencil.

Look at the biggest shapes.

Imagine it growing up from the ground.

What is the texture and color of the bark?

Look at the angles and paths growing from the trunk.

How do the branches change as they grow away from the tree?

How do they look as big shapes on the tree?

How does ONE look close up?

Use your eyes and hand to see the tree

Don't lift your pencil! Don't look!

You can look, but don't lift your pencil!

You can look and lift. Keep an eye on the subject.

Practice builds confidence. Perfection is cheap.

Put down the biggest shapes first.

Add only what you SEE, from large to small.

Pay attention to the direction of light.
