CRASH OF 1929

  • investors on the NewYork Stick Exchange dumped 13 million shares causing shares to plummet.
  • Many US businesses were ruined, and unemployment soon became a serious problem
  • Many countries relied upon American investment and loans and therefore the Crash led to a worldwide depression

FAMILIES

  • in 1933, 25 percent of all workers and 37 percent of all nonfarm workers were jobless
  • Some people starved; many others lost their farms and homes.
  • Shanty towns are of poor people living in improvised residences are made from scraps
  • corrugated metal, plywood and sheets of plastic.
  • It is a slum settlement also known as a squatter settlement.

THE NEW DEAL

  • "3 Rs": Relief, Recovery, and Reform
  • Relief for the unemployed and poor
  • Recovery of the economy to normal levels
  • Reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression
