PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ORGANELLES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

BY LILY CAPPUCCIO

Nucleus
Control center of the cell
Contains most of the cell's DNA and instructions for making proteins

Vacuoles
Store materials like water, salt, proteins, and carbohydrates

Lysosomes
Filled with enzymes
Break down lipids, carbohydrate, proteins, and "dead" organelles into smaller and useful molecules

Cytoskeleton
Network of protein filaments
Gives cells their shape and internal structure
Some also transport materials

Ribosomes
Make proteins

Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, packages, and tags proteins before they are "shipped" to their destination

Mitochondria
Power plants of cell
Convert the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use

Chloroplast
Capture energy from the sunlight
Convert it into food that contains chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis
