He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
While he was in prison, he was told that if he stopped his acts of violence, he would be allowed to go free. He did not agree.

We believe that South Africa belongs to all of the people who live in it and not to one group. Be it black or white we did not want interracial war, and tried to avoid it to the last minute.
