WHAT IS IT?
depression suffered by a mother following childbirth, typically arising from the combination of hormonal changes, psychological adjustment to motherhood, and fatigue.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Trouble sleeping when the baby sleeps
Feeling numb or disconnected from your baby.
Having scary or negative thoughts about the baby, like thinking someone will take your baby away or hurt your baby.
Worrying that you will hurt the baby.
Feeling guilty about not being a good mom, or ashamed that you cannot care for your baby.

WHEN IS IT DIAGNOSED?
This is normally diagnosed either at there first prenatal care visit, or sometime throughout the pregnancy
In most cases ppd goes away on its own in about 3 months

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
Untreated, the condition may last months or longer. Treatment can include counseling, antidepressants, or hormone therapy.

WHAT IS THE COST?
Screenings for ppd cost around $943 per women.
The annual cost could range from $7200-$8900

INTERESTING FACTS
PPD can affect as many as 10% of fathers as well.
There is no one test that definitively indicates that someone has PPD.
