What is abortion?

  • The deliberate termination of a pregnancy
  • Can happen at any time
  • The time a fetus is considered a life is not agreed upon
  • Procedure usually happens before 28 weeks

The abortion process

  • can happen any time upon request
  • fully covered by health insurance=free
  • does not hurt *given anasthetic and intravenous sedation

  • Appontment includes counseling, untrasound,dr's exam & aftercare
  • Can request female dr
  • You can't drive

Moral Issues with abortion

  • is a fetus considered a life before childbirth?
  • when a fetus is considered living.
  • Some believe it is acceptable if it threatens the mother's well being.
  • some believe its justified if you look at the mother's circumstances...ex:Finances

  • 1969-
  • 1869- Abortion=legal
  • Reasearch on abortion=illegal
  • Research on abortion=illegal
  • 1892- 1st criminal code, allows for abortion info to be legal.
  • 1926-1946: 4000-6000 women due bc of bugled illegal abortions
  • 1936- social worker arrested for giving info on abortions

  • 1969-federal commitee challenges restrictive abortion laws, including Henry Morgentaler
  • 1969-Henry Morgentaler goes to jail
  • 1971-1973-Morgantaler sentenced to 18 months
  • CARAL is founded

  • Born in Lodz,Polland
  • Survived most of the Holocaust
  • Came to Canada at the end WW2
  • Humanist
  • Studied medicine at Universite de Montreal

Dr Henry Morgentaler

  • Promoted the idea of freedom with sexuality and reproduction
  • Expressed his opinion on abortion laws in the house of commons.
  • Challenged the criminal code by giving safe abortions
  • Faced many trials, eventually got sentenced to 10 months of prison

  • laws against abortion were declared unconstitutional
  • continued to push his campaign all over Canada
  • died at 90 years old

  • Pope Paul VI's "Humanae Vitae" aka of human lif
  • Better explains the functioning family
  • would only approve if it threatned the mother's life
