CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TIMELINE

  • Anglo-Saxon's Period
  • ranges from the Ancient times to the Norman Conquest (1066)
  • This is known for its heroic poems and prose. (e.g. Beowulf)
  • Aesop's fables are under this period in children's literature.
  • Four manuscripts were preserved in this period, such as Junius, Exeter, Nowell Codex
  • Some other books are King Arthur and the Round table and The Sea Farer.

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TIMELINE

  • Medieval Period ( also called the Middle Ages)
  • Ranges from the mid-5th century to the 15th century
  • Books were focused on religiosity and spirituality.
  • Minimal plays are allowed to be participated by children.
  • An example of book during this period is The Holkhalm's Bible - an illustrated story about the childhood of Christ.

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TIMELINE

  • Didactic Period
  • from the 17th to the 18th century
  • Most books were written for the sake of religion and spirituality, rather than entertainment.
  • Famous for the works of the Grimms' brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, and John Newbery.
  • Fairytales had been published and widely known to people.
  • E.g. The Emperor's New Clothes, Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales.

  • Realism
  • This period in children's literature has the theme of stories which is not fiction.
  • Stories about life and different struggles, adventures and lessons are also part of realism.
  • Example of stories that has realism is The Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
