who were they

  • A group of African American pilots during wwII
  • They were the first black pilots to fly in the war
  • they formed the 332nd fighter group
  • The were called red tails because they painted the tails on there planes re
  • They were considered the red tail angels.

what they did in the war

  • They sometimes escorted bomber planes
  • They fought in the 332nd fighter group
  • They fought in a all black fighter group
  • They were served the 99th fighter squadrin
  • They flew P-47s and P-51s

how they came to be

  • Before the tuskegee airmen no black was able to fly in the airforce 
  • In 1939 a law was passed to give training to african americans
  • They were seperated into all black squadrins
  • The pilots got there name from the place they trained at 
  • They trained at the tuskegee airfield
