PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Definition of Stoichiometry:
-The scientific method of measuring the quantitative proportion of one one element to another
This is similar to cooking...
Cooking requires a recipe, ingredients and measurements. You can only achieve this only by measuring and comparing the quantity of the ingredients so that you can get the accurate proportion of each and prepare food as described in a recipe.
How is cooking similar to stoichiometry?
-Both use measurements
-Cooking:cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, quart, pint etc.
-Stoichiometry: grams, coefficients of chemical equation, moles, ml, L etc.
Another way cooking and Stoichiometry is similar:
-Both have a recipe(formula) and reagents(ingredients)
-If you put a certain amount of flour in, you will need to add a given amounts of other ingredients to make a "complete reaction."
Seeing the similarities with cooking and stoichiometry help you understand stoichiometry.
In stoichiometry you use conversions such as density, molar mass, ratio of coefficients, avogadro's number.
Conversion Factors
-Density:given
-Molar Mass: Atomic mass on periodic table
-Ratio of coefficients: chemical formula number in front of substance
-Avagadro's number: 6.02x10^23
Having this idea let's solve a problem...
