Essential Question

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL ILLNESS AND EDUCATION
To dive right into this presentation, here is my essential question. What is the relationship between mental illness and education? It is commonly thought that the two dont intersect but that isnt the case at all. In an article on mental health written by the founders and doctors at the School Mental Health Project said that, "It has long been acknowledged that a variety of psychosocial and health problems affect learning and performance in profound ways(P. 1)"

Taking initiative

With this is mind we have to apply this to kids of all ages. Especially Holden. Hes 17 which is right smack in the middle of high school. Many teens who struggle with mental illness are often to shy to speak up or know it wont be validated if they reach out for help. SMHP Is trying to provide a place where teens can. In their article they say that, "The challenge for those focused on mental health in schools is not only to understand the basic concerns, but to function on the cutting edge of change so that the concerns are effectively addressed" (P 7)

Moving Forward

Some ways to move forward were mentioned in the article. They said that schools should give a broad perspective in justifying "mental health" in schools. A second step would uld being able for students to be able and open to define their mental health and have the resources needed for it. Thirdly they propose the idea of healthy ways for expanding the impact of mental health.

Coming together

Now that I have brought to your attention how it does actually effect students and how we can take initiative to help, why dont we take action? Lets come together and help the kids who need help.
