SCIENCE VOCABULARY

MATTER

Matter- Anything that takes up space and mass. All matter is made of atoms.
I chose this image because a lot of laundry takes up space all over my room and it can be very heavy.

ATOM

Atom- The smallest unit of a chemical element
I chose this image because it shows an already small toy holding the smallest form of it.

ELEMENT

Element- Each element is made of only one kind of atom.
I chose this image because it shows all of the different varieties of yogurt you can make, just like the actual elements do.

PERIODIC TABLE

Periodic table- A list of all of the chemical elements that exist in the universe( that have been discovered so far by humans).
I chose this image because it represents the periodic table but with a fun twist!

MOLECULE

Molecule- A molecule is formed when 2 or more atoms join together. These may be 2 of the same atoms or 2 different atoms.
I chose this image because it shows skittles bonded together some that are the same and others that are different colors.

COMPOND

Compound- It’s formed when 2 or more different atoms are joined together. All compounds are also molecules but not all molecules are compounds.
I chose this image because it’s similar to the image on the slide before but this shows only different colored.

SUBSCRIPTS

Subscripts- how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule
I chose this image because you are sorta counting the atoms in each molecule.

COEFFICIENTS

Coefficient- Multiply the number of molecules you are making
I chose this image because it represents multiplication, and you multiple with the coefficient.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis- The process by which plants make their own food.
I chose this image because this is what photosynthesis would look like of you could see atoms.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

Cellular respiration- The process by which the cells of all living things break apart glucose to release energy.
I chose this image because it shows the plants and other stuff releasing energy.

PRODUCTS

What comes out of a reaction.
I chose this image because a total is the same as the out come.

REACTANTS

What goes into a reaction.
These to mints added up equal two they are what the total is made up of.

GLUCOSE

Glucose- is made up of six carbon dioxide atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms and 6 oxygen atoms.
I chose this image these because this is what glucose would look like if we all good see atoms.

CARBON DIOXIDE

Carbon Dioxide- is made up of 6 molecules of 2 atoms oxygen and carbon.
I chose this image because carbon dioxide is a gas and so is the image.

OXYGEN

Oxygen- is made up of 6 molecules with two atoms in each molecule of oxygen.
I chose this image because oxygen can be very dangerous, but at other times it’s not.
