CHAPTER 32

  • "Zoomorphism, where an animal takes a human being, or another animal, to be one of its kind." (Martel 191)
  • Pi explains about zoomorphism, where it is described about animal's living arrangements.
  • This is where an animal takes another animal to be its own kind.
  • This kind of concept is later shown when Richard Parker and Pi were together on the lifeboat.

CHAPTER 33

  • Pi has then pointed out,“Mamaji?” (Martel 196)
  • There was a visit to Pi's house, Pi shows a memorabilia.
  • The memorabilia only has 4 photos, them being Mamaji, the tiger, a pool, and Pi's school
  • Mamaji also means mother in Pi's language, although he barely remembers what his mom looks like.

CHAPTER 34

  • The Americans tend to have, "bone-crushing handshakes." (Martel 200)
  • Pi and his dad sold most animals to other zoos.
  • A large amount of paperwork was exchanged for authorization.
  • With the Americans, they were very judgemental in the story, as to inspecting the animals.

CHAPTER 35

  • "They have tobacco in Canada. And why do you want to buy cigarettes? We don’t smoke.” (Martel 205)
  • The family leaves to Madras, on June 21st, 1977.
  • With Pi's mother, she considers buying cigarettes, even though she doesn't smoke.
  • Pi's mother felt homesick, and wanted to smoke to ease away troubles.

CHAPTER 36

  • "I’ve just set foot on the cement steps of the front porch when a teenager bursts out the front door". (Martel 207)
  • Pi meets with his family.
  • There's no conflict, and seems to have a happy ending.
  • Pi's family is in Canada.

CHAPTER 37

  • “Richard Parker, is that you? It’s so hard to see. Oh, that this rain would stop! Richard Parker? Richard Parker? Yes, it is you!” (Martel 211)
  • Pi is now in the lifeboat with a storm, he then sees Richard Parker and invites him into the boat.
  • After that he jumps over board.

CHAPTER 38

  • "So the explosion, if there was one, was not a new noise.” (Martel 219)
  • Pi hears an explosion during the night and wakes.
  • He goes up to the deck and he sees men putting a life jacket on him and throw him overboard.
  • Pi explains the events that took place before the ship sank.

CHAPTER 39

  • “The zebra missed the tarpaulin.”(Martel 228)
  • Pi lands on the tarpaulin covering of a lifeboat.
  • The zebra runs overboard and jumps into the lifeboat.

CHAPTER 40

  • “If there hadn’t been the lifebuoy I wouldn’t have lasted a minute.” (Martel 230)
  • Richard Parker pulled himself back into he life boat and Pi is once again in the water.
  • Sharks appear in the water and he jumps back in with Richard.
  • Pi also uses a lifebuoy to save himself against the sharks.
