JOHN MERCER LANGSTON

INTRODUCTION

  • Louisa county, Virginia
  • Was the he began to focus on establishing civil rights for black citizens.
  • He attended Oberlin college.john got his masters degree in theology. Langston was determined so he studied privately in Elyria, Ohio. Later on that year John Langston passed his bar exam.
  • John mercer Langston died in 1891

TIME LINE

  • In 1888 he became African American can to win a congressional election in the states Virginia .
  • In 1854 John became the first African American lawyer in the state of Ohio.
  • In 1867 he served as a city councilman.

THE1ST ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • He ran as a republican candidate for a seat in the u.s. House of Representatives. Langston also been in the congress seat from 1890 to1891.

THE 2ND ACCOMPLISHMENT

  • He established q law of practice in brow helm,Ohio. He organized an antislavery societies at both the state and local level . He also helped run way slaves to escape along the Ohio section of the under ground rail road. Also Langston s public social reform were broad and included appeals for women's rights and temperance.

THE 3RD ACCOMPLISHMENT

  • John served on the board of education his new law practice established and respected, Langston handled legal matters for the town. John vigilantly supported the republican candidates for local and national office, he was credited by helping steer the Ohio Republican Party towards radicalism and a strong antislavery position.
