Turning Education Inside out (Judy Dempsey)

Dempsey, J. (2016). Turning education inside-out : Confessions of a Montessori principal.

The start to Montessori Schools

  • Montessori schools were started by Dr. Montessori.
  • Dr. Montessori wanted to give children a positive outlet that would allow for development to be aided.
  • During the development, Dr. Montessori had completed valuable research leading to understanding developmental periods.

Understanding the developmental periods allowed for a prepared environment to be introduced.

Montessori Classrooms

  • Montessori classrooms are based off of age groups.
  • The classroom also functions with small groups, allowing for children to use group knowledge.
  • The classrooms are made to be an open environment.
  • They consist of open shelving with materials that the children can use freely.

Montessori Classrooms

  • These classrooms consist of three year age gaps.
  • This is to create a family like structure to aid development on multiple levels.
  • Montessori classrooms stress cosmic curriculum to provide a sense of societal worth.

Montessori Classrooms (Continued)

  • Cirriculum also involves self esteem building, so children can understand they are making bad choices instead of being the mistake themselves.

Why do Montessori Schools work?

  • Montessori Schools work because children want to learn but need to learn at their own pace avoiding the disruption of developmental periods.
  • Teachers in these schools aid the children to understand that no one is always right about everything. (There is room to learn new things)

Why do Montessori Schools work? (CONT..)

  • Teachers also provide a range in materials allowing for children that are behind or ahead to feel they are gaining knowledge.
  • Practical life skills are implemented to aid in development of being a member of society and a classroom.

How to recognize authentic Montessori Schools

  • Look for affliations the schools may have
  • Look for training or certification teachers and the school have.
  • Look for accrediation.
  • Ask to look into a classroom, you should see materials avilable at student level and clean rooms.
  • Ask to observe, while doing so you should see children engaged in the class and the teachers should blend in with students.

Parents

  • Parents provide past knowledge of factors that may interfere with learning.
  • There are three types of parents. (Helicopter, Zamboni, and hummingbird)
