PLAINS

  • A large area of flat land with trees
  • Ex: Great Plains

GULF

  • A deep inlet of sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth
  • Gulf of Mexico

REEF

  • A ridge of jagged rock, coral or sand just above or below the surface of the sea
  • Ex- Coral Reef

VALLEY

  • A low area of land between hills or mountains
  • Ex: Sacramento valley in Northern Cal.

MOUNTAIN

  • A large natural elevations of the Earths surface rising abruptly from surrounding level
  • Ex: Mt. Everest.

ISLAND

  • A piece of land surrounded by water
  • Ex: Hawaiian Islands

ARCHIPELGO

  • A group of islands
  • Ex: Caribbean Islands

ISTHMUS

  • A narrow strip of land with sea on neither side
  • Forming a link between two larger areas of land
  • Ex: Panama

CANYON

  • A deep gorge
  • Ex: GrandCanyon

LAKE

  • A large body of water surrounded by water
  • Ex: The Great Lakes

RIVER

  • A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to a lake
  • Ex: Mississippi River

PLATEAU

  • An area of relatively level high grounds
  • Ex: Colorado Plateau

STRAIT

  • A narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two large areas of water
  • Ex: Strait of Sicily

PENINSULA

  • A piece of land almost surrounded by water.
  • Ex: Antarctic Peninsula
