FOUNDER-pETER mINUIT

  • Founded by the Dutch in 1664
  • King Charles II didn't like them, and wanted the colony, so he sent warships to take it over
  • The Dutch gave up without fighting
  • Renamed after King Charles II's brother, Duke of York

WHY?

  • Dutch originally founded New Netherland so that the West India Company could establish fur trading in North America

  • Coastal colony
  • Fertile soil
  • Long, cold winters
  • Cool summers
  • Contains the Hudson River

POLITICAL MAKEUP

  • In 1683, King James gave New York a legislature
  • The governors sought advice from the King and powerful locals

ECONOMIC SUPPORT

  • Fur trade previously established by Dutch
  • Exported food, especially grain, provided most of the needed capital to make New York successful

  • Peter Stuyvesant-last Dutch Director-General before New Netherland was ceded to the English in 1664
  • November 25, 1783, the last of the English troops in North America left

  • Wall Street- Manhattan had a sizable Dutch port that was frequently raided by Indians. In response, the Dutch built a wall from one side of the island to the other, which led to the road that goes down it being called Wall Street.
