THE SIEVE AND THE SAND

I - Q

I is for Investigation
Montag often heard the mechanical hound sniffing around outside his house. The hound also suspiciously barked at Montag when he was in the firehouse. Beaty had sent the mechanical hound on an investigation to try and find out what Montag was hiding.

J is for Jittery
When Montag eventually brought back the book to Beaty, he was super nervous. Beaty was telling Montag about this dream he had involving him and books. Montag couldn't contain how nervous he was.

K is for Killing
The society that Montag lives in isn't the kindest. The firemen decide to burn books and are willing to kill people with the books they burn. Whatever it takes to keep people from learning, they will do.

L is for Library
There are no libraries in Fahrenheit 451. Any books are supposed to be burned since they create thought which isn't allowed. If there was a library in this town, it would be engulfed in flames.

M is for Miserable
The reason for no books was to make everyone happy. Since the books created thought and made people angry they decided to make them illegal. Montag agrees with this until he realizes how miserable the world really is and how unhappy his life is.

N is for Nonplussed
Montag doesn't understand if he should be happy about books or not. He used to love burning books and agreed with everyone, but after he met Clarisse he doesn't think that. Montag has started to read books and try to figure them out.

O is for Obstacles
Throughout this book, Montag has faced many obstacles. When Montag has to start the old lady's house on fire, when Beatty shows up at his house and even when he has to bring the book back to Beatty. Montag has had lots of decisions to make.

P is for Patience
When Montag comes home to Mildred's friends, he has to have patience with them. He gets very annoyed and yells at one of the ladies. He ends up unplugging their television "families" also and reading them upsetting poetry.

Q is for Quiet
Since Montag has the stolen books and Beatty has already warned him about having them, he has to keep quiet. Montag isn't allowed to have books since they are illegal but he wants to figure out what they're about. Montag tries to keep them a secret while the hound is sniffing around outside.
