As the African Cultural Center observes, West Africa is a diverse region.

CLIMATE

West Africa is the region of western Africa that includes the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Africa has a large quantity of natural resources including diamonds, salt, gold, iron, cobalt, uranium, copper, bauxite, silver, petroleum and cocoa beans, but also woods and tropical fruits.

The Economic Community of West African States is a regional group of fifteen West African countries.

GOVERMENT

African societies today have two levels of government: the indigenous organization, which pertains to local groups, and the national government of the independent nation - states.

CHALLENGES AND ISSUES

  • During 2014, along with the horrific outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, the continent as a whole experienced one of the more turbulent years in its recent history with widespread protests, unrest, civil wars, and insurgencies.
