Era in which women gained free spirit.
Clothing represented their new spirit of independence.
Fashion trends include shorter dresses, bobbed haircuts, scarves and stockings with bold geometric shapes and designs.
Clothes was also loose fitting and allowed more movement.

Flappers/Garconne
Flappers style was a dramatic and shocking change for that time period.
Women wore short dresses that were very loose and allowed movement.
Didn't wear corsets and used stockings with geometric shaped patterns and bright colors.
Garconne means "little boy"

The influence of Egypt
Discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt and the movie Cleopatra starring Theda Bara influenced the new style.
Did makeup styles inspired by the movie and wore headpieces in representation of that style.

Corsets were replaced by camisoles, also known as chemise, which were loose fitting undergarments.
Scarves became very popular and a "must-have" in outfits.
Cloche hats, meaning "bell" in french, were the most popular accessory.

Along with flapper dresses, women used rolled stockings under them and held them in place with garters.
Amy Johnson borrowed knickerbockers from men. She used them with a shirt and tie for female aviators.
Wrap coats with fur accessories became popular.

Fabric patterns were influenced by surrealism, impressionism and Art Deco.
Had strong colors and geometric shapes.
Fabrics such as velvet, silk and furs were popular with the wealthy.
Cotton, wool, synthetic fiber and jersey were cheaper but also very popular.

The use of mannequins came during this era, they were used to display the combination of colors and accessories.
Also during this time, the use of hooks, buttons, zippers and snaps to fasten clothing.
