POETRY FORMATS

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT FORMATS FOR POETRY

  • Sonnet
  • Limerick
  • Haiku
  • Epic
  • Free verse

SONNETS

  • Typically a sonnet has 14 lines that have a specific rhyme scheme.
  • There are three main types of sonnets which are: the Italian (or Petrarchan) sonnet, the English (or Shakespearean) sonnet, and the Spenserian sonnet. They get there name from the poets that made them famous.

LIMERICK

  • short and fun five-line poem with a distinctive rhythm
  • The first, second and fifth lines are longer than the third and fourth lines.

HAIKU

  • Japanese origin
  • It has 3 lines in which have 17 syllables.
  • Typically the first line has 5 syllables the next line has 7 and the last one have 5.
  • Usually are about nature and a specific season

EPIC

  • Lengthily poem, narrative
  • Centered around some type of hero whether it’s a legendary hero or a conventional hero
  • tells about the hero’s adventures and accomplishments

FREE VERSE

  • Don’t follow rules
  • Rhyming, syllable count, punctuation, number of lines, number of stanzas, and line formation doesn’t matter, it can be anyway the author wants it to be
  • The one thing that needs to be done in a free verse poem is showing your thoughts and emotions and getting your point across
  • There is no wrong or right way of creating a free verse poem
