PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS POLLUTION

  • Students are i teoduced to air, land, and ocean pollutants
  • Main causes identified and impact on environment discussed
  • Students begin KWL chart
  • Matching pollutant to air, land or ocean
  • Students make poster of one pollutant and a env. conseq

TRASH TRAITS

  • Students define important terms (marine, debris, etc)
  • Students classify trash and share classifications with the class
  • Students make predictions about trash as it relates to marine debris
  • Students experiment w/ the effect of wind, rain and floating on trash
  • (Fan, watering can, bucket of water) Record on worksheet

DEGRADE VS DECOMPOSE

  • Students learn about organic matter vs artificial
  • Students predict, sort, and match worksheet on degrade times
  • Students bury banana, newspaper, and plastic cup (2 wks)
  • Students connect degradability to env. impact.
  • Students view Great Pacific Garbage Patch movie and connect to lesson

MARINE ANIMALS AND HARMFUL DEBRIS

  • S's learn about how characteristics of animals influences the impact of marine debris
  • S's read a description of animal and chooses the piece of garbage that is most hazardous
  • S's explains why and groups discuss other garbage that may be dangerous.
  • S's write a paragraph from a hurt animals point of view, taken from one of our examples.

OIL SPILL

  • S's attempt to clean up glitter/oil from water using household items
  • S's record notes and share outcome with other groups.
  • S's learn about past oil spills, envir. impact and clean up attempts.

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

  • S's identify ways they can reduce, reuse or recycle their waste
  • S's are shown a variety of packaging and predict find out which causes most waste
  • S's take a virtual field trip to recycle center
  • S's try to find ways to reuse items
  • S's make a brochure about RRR

RECYCLED ROBOT

  • S's view and discuss recycled art
  • S's create a recycled robot using metal can, magnets and plastic garbage.
