ANCIENT EGYPT

Mummification

Egyptians believed that when somebody dies their soul goes to the afterlife, as well as whatever is buried with them. Mummifying someone would enable the soul to recognise the body when it is time to reunite.

To mummify a body a priest would take out its internal organs and place them in separate jars. They would then proceed to dry the body, effectively eliminating the source of decay -moisture. After a few day the priest would wrap the body in linen.
