WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

  • Mostly black but usually has white markings on rump or chest
  • Males are usually bigger than females
  • Can weigh up to 14 kg

WHERE DOES IT LIVE IN THE WILD?

  • Wild Tasmanian Devils can only be found in the wild in Tasmania
  • They prefer to live in coastal scrublands and forests
  • They sleep under rocks or in caves, logs or burrows

HABITATS AND BEHAVIOURS

  • Tasmanian Devils feed on dead animals
  • Tasmanian devils mate once a year in March
  • The females can give birth to 50 babies at a time
  • Only four can survive, the rest die of malnourishment

CONSERVATION STATUS

  • The Tasmanian devil's population has declined by 60 percent since 2001 due to a cancer called devil facial tumor disease (DFTD)
  • The Save the Tasmanian Devil Program is an initiative created by the Australian and Tasmanian governments to save the animals from DFTD
