INTRODUCTION

  • Robert Smalls was born on April 5th, 1839 in Beaufort, SC.
  • Interesting fact- On several occasions Robert ignored curfew and stayed out with white companions.
  • Robert taught himself to read, and was later briefly allowed to go to school.
  • He died on February 23, 1915

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Robert sailed "The Planter",a Confederate ship to the Union in 1862
  • Robert Small then joined the navy to support the union until1863
  • Robert Smalls served in the House of Representatives after the civil war

SPECIFIC ACOMPLISHMENTS

  • When Robert sailed the planter to the union he gave them the ships supplies and was given a $1,500 cash prize
  • Robert left the navy in March 1863 when he joined the army
  • He served in the House of Representatives for 4 years after the civil war(1875-1879)

Selfless- Robert was selfless when he took the planter to the union and freed himself and 17 other passengers
Hard working- Robert was going to work hard to earn money, so that he and his wife could be free

Life Lesson
A quality you could learn from Robert Smalls is determination. Robert was a determined person and showed this because when he and his wife couldn't be free because they didn't have enough money, he went and got the money to pay for them.
