Cite

  • Definition- To quote directly from the text copied word-word/with quotations around it
  • Characteristics- Using information from the source giving credit to the source.Sources are not cited twice in a sentence
  • Examples-MLA Format-Washington,Booker T. Pg.70/DuBois,W.E.B Pg.30/Garvey,Marcus Pg.

Analyze

  • Definition-Making a claim about the text based on evidence from text
  • Characteristics-Using multi-methods be multi-disciplinary, and when analyzing be problem focused
  • Examples-Asking questions,researching topics you're looking for,and using sample questions
  • Non-Examples-Writing the same thing over, and telling only one thing about the topic

Infer

  • Definition-Applying what you know to what you have read
  • Characteristics- It's what you read,and what you already know about the text
  • Examples-We needed umbrellas to go inside. I can infer that it is raining. I was ready to eat the food that we ordered. I can infer that the person ordering is really hungry
  • Non-Examples-Not knowing what you are reading about in the text

Explicit

  • Definition-Specifically stated in the text
  • Characteristics-Can be easily transferred through written verbal communication
  • Examples-Referring to facts and experiences that can consciously know and declared
  • Non-Examples-Not giving specific details in a text or passage stating facts

Tone

  • Definition-An attitude of a writer toward a subject or audience
  • Characteristics-The quality of showing feeling or emotions
  • Examples-The tone in writing will be reflective of your mood as you are writing.
  • Non-Example-Not showing quality feeling or emotions in the text

Objective

  • Definition-Belonging to the case of a noun or pronoun that is an object on a transitive verb or a preposition
  • Characteristics-The objectives must be derived from,and consistent with, the intention of the identified goal
  • Examples--The direct or indirect object of a verb or verbal,the object of a preposition,the subject of an infinitive
  • Non-Examples-Not identifying goals of a verb

Denotation

  • Definition-A translation of a sign precisely to its literal meaning
  • Characteristics-It has a dictionary meaning to a word
  • Examples-There are many different examples such as a dog,orange,or bird
  • Non-Examples-Not the literal meaning of something

Connotation

  • Definition-A meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing which it describes explicitl
  • Characteristics-The ideas and feelings associated with the wor
  • Examples-Words that are ssociated with the text
  • Non-Examples-Words that aren't associated in the tetx

Implicit

  • Definition-Information in the text stated or implied by the author
  • Characteristics-Something that is told in the text by the author
  • Examples-I am in trouble. I cannot speak a certain language
  • Non-Examples-Specific information stated in the text

Textual Evidence

  • Definition-Evidence from a text that you can use to illustrate your ideas and support argument
  • Characteristics-Supported ideas that are stated in the text
  • Examples-Logical and clear,Relevant, and Accurate
  • Non-Examples-Not logical evidence in the text

Subjective

  • Definition-Belonging to the thinking subject rather than to the object of thought
  • Characteristics-Pertaining to a characteristic of an individual
  • Examples-My foot hurts a lot. I will do the work myself
  • Non-Examples-Not pertaining to an individual or subject of the text
