AMENDMENT 1

  • People given the freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion they choose, freedom to peacefully assemble in public and freedom to petition government

AMENDMENT 2

  • People have the right to carry and own weapons and use them appropriately. (Bear arms/militia)

AMENDMENT 3

  • During peace or war, no soldier will be allowed in anyone's house without the owner's permission unless asked by law

AMENDMENT 4

  • Citizens have the right to be free from unreasonable searches or seizures. Police must have a warrant, signed paper from the judge that gives him/her permission to search the citizen's house

AMENDMENT 5

  • Citizens have the right to remain silent if accused of a crime and have the right to not be charged for the same crime twice (double jeopardy)

AMENDMENT 6

  • Citizens have a right to a fair trial and right to request a jury where he/she decides

AMENDMENT 7

  • Guarantees that Americans will receive a jury trial in civil (as opposed to criminal) cases involving property worth more than $20. Today, however, people do not bring cases to federal courts unless a much larger sum of money is involved.

AMENDMENT 8

  • Citizens have right to be free from excessive, cruel and unusual punishment

  • People stll have rights that are to be protected even if those rights are not mentioned in the Bill of Rights
