EQUINE COLORS AND PATTERNS

Bay

  • Body Color- Red to brown
  • Points- black lower leegs, mane, tail, tips of ears, and nostril edges

Gray

  • Skin- Black
  • Body Color- a mixture of black and white hairs
  • This color of horse lightens with age

Palomino

  • Body Color- darker or lighter variations of gold
  • Can be sooty
  • Mane and Tail Color- white, pale yellow, silver or mixed
  • Skin Color- Gray, black, brown, or mottled

White

  • Color of Horse when Born- white with no other colors of hair
  • Color- throughout their entire life horse stays white
  • Skin Color- pink
  • Eye Color- brown, blue or hazel
  • A truly white horse is relatively rare to come by

Sorrel

  • Body Color- light red to copper red
  • Mane and Tail Color- usually same color as body but can be lighter (For example- A flaxen mane and tail meaning a blonde colored mane and tail)
